Magnum, p.i. is an American crime drama television series starring Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a private investigator (P.I.) living in Oahu, Hawaii. The series initially ran on CBS from December 1980, to May 1988.
The original theme music for the opening credits of the pilot episode was a mid-tempo jazzy piece by Ian Freebairn-Smith. This music was also used for the next nine regular episodes. Beginning in Episode 12, it was replaced by a more up tempo theme typical of 1980s action series by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter with guitar by Larry Carlton. This theme had been used during the show and over the closing credits from Episode 8. A longer version of this second theme ("Theme from Magnum P.I.", 3:25 in duration) credited to Post was released as a single by Elektra Records in 1982. The b-side was the theme to The Rockford Files.
The pilot TV movie first aired on ITV on February 27, 1981 and the series proper began on May 23, 1981. Mike Post's theme was first heard in the UK on June 13, 1981.
Metal Mickey is a fictional five-foot-tall robot, as well as the name of a spin-off television show starring the same character. The robot character was created, controlled and voiced (using a Vocoder) by Johnny Edward, who was responsible for the No 1 hit "Save Your Love" by Renée & Renato. Metal Mickey first appeared on British television in the ITV children's magazine show The Saturday Banana, produced by Southern Television in 1978.
The television show was created under LWT's Humphrey Barclay who described Metal Mickey as a show "with the appeal of Star Wars, the Daleks and Mork and Mindy". All 41 episodes were written by Colin Bostock-Smith and the series ran from September 6, 1980 to January 15, 1983. Micky Dolenz, formerly of The Monkees pop group, was brought in to produce and he directed all but two of the episodes.
The music was composed by Irish musician and songwriter Phil Coulter. The theme tune was co-written by Bill Martin, with whom Coulter enjoyed success with Eurovision Song Contest entries for Sandy Shaw and Cliff Richard. A single was released in December 1982 on Johnny Edwards' Hollywood Records label, and credited to Metal Mickey & His Almost Human Friends.
