Lemon Popsicle is an Israeli 1978 teen comedy-drama film that began a series of several films throughout the 1980s that follow the antics of a group of three teenage boys in Tel Aviv during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The soundtracks for each film comprised of largely American songs from the era. Producer Menahem Golan, when asked about the music used in the first film, claimed that the music rights cost more than the production of the film itself.
The soundtrack albums for four of the films were released in the UK on budget record labels.
The soundtrack for Private Popsicle (1982), which followed Hot Bubblegum, was released by CBS. The soundtrack for Up Your Anchor (1985) was released on the Red Bus label and that appears to have been it for UK soundtrack releases for the Lemon Popsicle series, which continued into 1988.
The soundtrack album was released in most territories on the CBS label but, in the UK, it went out on Warwick Records (WW 5050). The album was marketed for the Christmas 1978 market and entered the UK Albums Chart initially for one week at #62 on March 25, 1979. It returned to the chart in June at a peak of #42. The album spent a total of six weeks on the chart.
The cover boasts "25 Incredible Hits - 20 Great Artists" but there were actually only 19 artists.
When it was originally released, the bottom of the front cover listed some of the 20 artists on the album. It included the Big Bopper who was listed performing "Chantilly Lace". However, a second, and more common pressing removed the names from the front and the Big Bopper's version of the song was replaced by Jerry Lee Lewis'.
The tracks by Jon Morris and Jo Moss are missing from Spotify so they have been substituted in the playlist by the original versions by David Seville & The Chipmunks and The Teddy Bears, respectively.
