Gladys Knight (born May 28, 1944) is an American singer and actress, often referred to as the "Empress of Soul", who recorded hits through the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s with her family group Gladys Knight & the Pips.
Knight recorded two solo albums in 1978 and 1979. After a successful 1988 tour, the Pips retired and Knight began her solo career.
